He accepted the responsibility of the entire village. Knowing full-well that their lives all rested on his shoulders he took it upon himself to skylark in another village and waste time by trying to make a profit. At no point was he sent to make a profit but only to get emergency grain. The time he wasted selling the grain and re-buying it could have prevented the villagers from participating in such a heinous act as cannibalism. His actions were his own, and for them he must pay.
