Blood Pressure Monitor...?

this might sound kind of stupid but... whats the little on on a normal blood pressure monitor that says DIA. sand underneath mmHg and another one SYS. and underneath mmHg... what do they show you? theres another one that says pulse and i know what that is but what about the other two? what do they mean?? oh and by the way its for my grandma....
